The history of the HMAS Swan (III) Destroyer

The HMAS Swan III, a River-class destroyer escort, was launched on December 16, 1967, and commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) on January 20, 1970. Named after the Swan River in Western Australia, this vessel played a crucial role during its operational life, reflecting the strategic maritime needs of Australia during the Cold War period. As a part of the RAN, HMAS Swan was equipped with advanced sonar and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) technology, which allowed it to patrol vast ocean areas, protecting Australian waters and supporting allied operations in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

One of the most notable aspects of HMAS Swan’s service was its involvement in various international naval exercises and missions. These included the RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific Exercise), a major biennial maritime exercise that involves naval forces from the Pacific Rim and beyond. HMAS Swan’s participation in these exercises not only demonstrated its capabilities but also strengthened the RAN’s relationships with allied navies, enhancing cooperative security efforts in the region. Additionally, the ship was deployed on numerous occasions for patrol duties and operations, ensuring the safety and security of maritime routes critical to Australia’s trade and economic stability.

HMAS Swan also made significant contributions to humanitarian missions, showcasing the versatility and adaptability of the RAN’s fleet. One notable mission was its involvement in disaster relief operations in the wake of Cyclone Tracy, which devastated Darwin, Australia, in December 1974. After 26 years of distinguished service, HMAS Swan was decommissioned on September 13, 1996, and later scuttled off the coast of Dunsborough, Western Australia, where it now serves as an artificial reef and diving site, continuing its legacy in a new capacity.

I was a crew member on Swan, we were on deployment in SE Asia at the time of Cyclone Tracy spending Xmas in Hong Kong.Other than being on standby, we had no involvement in that operation.
